WHAT IS THE MONTANA SAFE & HEALTHY SCHOOLS PROJECT?
School Services of Montana (SSoM) has been awarded a grant through the DOJ Bureau of Justice Assistance's STOP School Violence program. Through this award, SSoM will implement a multi-faceted approach to preventing school violence through professional learning, coordinated school partnerships, and resources and training on whole child skill development. Implementation of the Montana Safe and Healthy Schools Project will include collaborations with schools and communities to proactively teach students and staff the skills to thrive with interpersonal relationships, self-and social awareness, and conflict resolution skills, including antibullying techniques.

WHAT ARE THE PROJECT GOALS?
Through this project, SSoM will help promote school and community wellness through the following goals:

- Increase professional learning on proactive approaches to mental health: whole child practices, trauma-informed practices, restorative justice practices, wellness, and self-care strategies;
- Connect schools and communities for collaborative approaches to wellness;
- Provide resources and support for schoolwide programs focusing on whole child skill development;
- Align resources with existing efforts through organizational partnerships, amplifying existing mental health efforts through other Montana state and regional entities;
- Help build sustainability for continued support - externally and internally.
WHAT WILL SCHOOLS GAIN?
- Proactive strategies for students and staff in the areas of: self-management, self-and social-awareness, and conflict resolution skills including anti-bullying techniques;
- Professional learning on evidence-based approaches to mental health: whole child practices, trauma-informed practices, restorative justice practices, wellness, and self-care strategies;
- Facilitation of connecting schools and communities for collaborative approaches to wellness;
- Amplification of existing mental health efforts through other Montana state and regional entities.
HOW CAN YOU OR YOUR SCHOOL / ORGANIZATION GET INVOLVED?
- Join one of our "Prioritizing School and Community Wellness" events. Events will include professional learning, resources and training on whole child skill development and mental health. Space and facilitation will be provided for collaborative conversations to identify needs and resources, and to problem-solve together with multiple stakeholders.
- Dates and locations are TBD: SSoM member districts and interested community-based organizations are encouraged to connect with SSoM regarding participation and collaboration opportunities.
- Apply for "Caring School Community" Schoolwide Programming Scholarships to receive free materials and professional learning for a schoolwide approach to whole child skill development (grades K-8)
- If you took our Survey (link below) to indicate interest, instructions were emailed to you.
- SSoM will prioritize member school districts (or regions) for facilitating a collaborative two-pronged approach to preventing school violence through school-community-student partnerships. Schools will also be able to apply for participation in a year long program which aims to develop a network of community resources to impact student wellness.
